At the jaw-dropping price of €7.50 for a single ride, water ferries (vaporettos) in Venice are awfully expensive for a visitor. While locals benefit from reduced fares and monthly and yearly passes, visitors who don’t want to pay the escalated single-use fares, will have to elbow their way around the city. The Venezia Unica City Pass card is a cheaper solution that ACTV (the company that runs the public transportation in Venice) offers for the purchase of multiple-day passes with other city discounts and skip-the-line perks included. The Venezia Unica City Pass is a good option for travelers figuring out how to get around Venice, visiting Venice for 3 days or more, and planning to explore the lagoon every day by vaporetto and/or visit several museums.

Venezia Unica sells options for discounted passes according to the length of your stay. Just visit the website of Venezia Unica to have an idea of what you can buy in advance. But! The process is not straightforward. Firstly, you have to create a card with your name and secondly you can pick the services you want to buy and add it to your card. Once you’ve finished, you can also buy an insurance that covers cancellation of your purchases on the card. After filling a form with your details and paying the amount due, you’ll receive an email with a code to be used once in Venice: for the transportation, present the code at a sale point and you’ll receive your pass. The passes also include the benefit of many discounts for Venice museums and tours, just show your card at the entrance.
The advantages of buying beforehand consist of reduced rates and/or skipping the lines to enter major monuments and museums, therefore jumping the sometimes long queues. The services are plentiful. ACTV tickets or passes (under the section “Time-limited tickets”) allow unrestricted use of the public transport in the city that includes “vaporetti” (water-buses in Venice, Lido and the lagoon islands), buses in Mestre, Marghera, the mainland and those departing and arriving in Piazzale Roma. The bus from and to Marco Polo Airport is a special service and you have to add it specifically. Depending on where you’re going to stay in Venice, if you arrive by plane, the Alilaguna service could be more practical: it links the airport with Murano and Venice by boat. See our tips for how to get from the airport to Venice here.
