Day Trips from Venice

September 10, 2019 by prontopia Leave a Comment

Venice is such a rich city that it would take a couple of lifetimes to know it thoroughly, you may need to see something different. We are happy to suggest some of the best day trips from Venice.

Venice can be a difficult city to navigate. Get where you need to go stress-free – schedule a Prontopia local to assist you today!

Chioggia

Day trips from Venice

Chioggia has always been considered a miniature Venice without its allure. Even though the two look alike, Chioggia has its own popular spirit. Its loud, unruly, unaffected people with their unique vernacular are fascinating.

Since Chioggia is one of the biggest Italian fishing ports, its market deserves a visit. Go to Da Nicola, a restaurant in one of the side streets of Corso del Popolo to taste the market’s exquisite delicatessen. Dishes are prepared with the fish of the day, so listen to the host’s suggestions because there is no menu.

There is a frequent coach service from Piazzale Roma, but line 11 from Lido is much more engaging. You’ll start with a bus driving along the islands of Lido and Pellestrina, and you’ll finish on a ferry sailing to the center of Chioggia.

Colli Euganei

Day Trips from Venice

The hilly area south-west of Padua originated from volcanoes. Spend a day soaking in the natural hot springs while sipping local white wine. Alla Costiera is a superb winery. There’s no longer untamed nature, but the hot water flowing from the subsoil has been canalized for ages and can be enjoyed in the hotels who welcome day guests, too.

Take the hourly train to Bologna and get off at Montegrotto. Probably, the best hotels are the Hotel Terme Preistoriche, with an open-air pool against a rural background, and the Hotel Petrarca, less charming but with more facilities. At about 10 kilometers, the Villa dei Vescovi in Luvigliano is a refined Renaissance mansion with awesome frescoes. It is now in the hands of the FAI, the Italian national trust.

Trieste

Day Trips from Venice

It’s only a 2-hour train ride from Venice to the magnificent city of Trieste. The Hapsburg monarchy ruled Trieste for over five centuries, and the city bears evidence of its prosperous history. Trieste has one of the most beautiful seafronts in Italy. It has beach resorts right in the middle of the city, and opens up to the vast Piazza Unità d’Italia.

In the piazza, you will find the Caffè degli Specchi, a coffee shop with a Middle-European feel. Another like this is Caffè San Marco in Via Battisti. You will enjoy a stupdendous view from the top of the hill over the gulf.

Another can’t-miss stop is a few miles from the city center. The Miramare Castle has strong links with Archduke Maximilian, the future emperor of Mexico, who ordered its construction.

These are only some of the things that you can do as day trips from Venice. If you like to discover more about the city and have tips on what to do, ask a local or read more on our blog.
